I wonder if the sun ever looks at the stars and wonders to itself,
"Wow, the stars are so beautiful.
Look how they glisten in the darkness.
Look how they shine.
There's so many of them,
Yet each and every one of them
Is beautiful and unique.
I wish I could be like that."
Little does the sun know
That seven billion human beings
Wake up to the sun's golden rays
Every single morning.
Little does the sun know
That seven billion human beings
Go to sleep once the sun disappears
Little does the sun know, It starts every day,
And it ends every night.
Little does the sun know,
The humans have a name
For when the sun
Greets them in the morning
And bids them farewell each evening.
Little does the sun know
That the humans wake up to greet it
At a time known as sunrise,
When it lifts the burden of darkness
And fills the world with light.
Little does the sun know,
That the humans watch it beyond the horizon
At a time known as sunset,
Where the sun turns the sky to purples and pinks,
And the humans beg for its return in the morning.
Little does the sun know
The humans turn its light Into power so that they might Carry the sun with them
Into the night.
Little does the sun know,
The humans beg for the sun's return
When it decides to hide behind the clouds.
Little does the sun know
That its beams of light
Nourish the plants
On which the humans feed.
Little does the sun know
That the humans named the sunflower
After its golden beauty
And it's determination
To follow the sun's light.
Little does the sun know
How its light glistens
In the canopies of the forests
And the waves of the seas.
Little does the sun know
That it is the center piece of our solar system.
Little does the sun know
It is a star.
Little does the sun know
It is the biggest star in our sky. The process behind this piece:
The first stanza of this poem came from a genuine thought of mine: "Does the sun ever look at the stars and say: 'I wish I was like that'?" After all, the sun doesn't know what it is. It can't look in a mirror, and we never try to tell it what it is because we'd vanish in a fiery ball of flame :D
I kind of think about this piece as envying others for something you didn't know you already had. For example, envying someone for their beauty and not recognizing how beautiful you are. I think a lot of people aren't introspective enough to realize that a lot of the traits they admire in others are traits they already have themselves! The sun probably doesn't realize that the whole solar system revolves around it, and that it's presence carries a significant gravity (figuratively and literally) in our daily lives. Likewise, I think sometimes people don't realize how much of an impact they have on other people's lives. Many people in my life tend to say things like "people wouldn't notice if I was gone," but it's simply not true! Sometimes, just seeing a certain person can be part of a routine. I remember thinking that I don't make a difference, but then one day I came to school and people were saying things like "where were you yesterday?! and "are you okay?" because the day before that was the first time I missed a class that year (it was already April). People were thrown off because I was always around, and they missed my bubbliness!
So remember that you're more capable than you know, and that you make a difference in someone's life, whether you know it or not :D
